This is a very special guitar, # 26 in the series of 25 Gibson Super 4000 Chet Atkins guitars. It was made by Gibson Custom staff for Don Auten, manager of the Custom Shop when the series was conceived and built. This Super 4000 differs form the 25 Chet Atkins guitars with its finish (wine red instead of light sunburst), the 6-finger tailpiece instead of the custom Super 400 tailpiece, and the double pickup /pickguard setup instead of the single humbucker /pickguard. This guitar also comes with the single humbucker pickup with Chet’s name engraved on the cover, and comes in its original leather-covered hard case that is reminiscent of the prewar Super 400 cases. The two-pickup pickguard has a sliding volume control and selector switch under the outer pickguard edge, and the pickups are full and crisp-sounding. Overall condition is excellent+ with only minor dings here and there. Note also the squared-off end of the fretboard, another custom touch. The top is X-braced internally and is designed to inhibit feedback per Chet’s direction. It has a 25.4″ scale length, is 1-11/16″ wide at the nut, and is 2-5/8″ deep.
